Our Story

Why we do what we do โ€” and why it matters.

Who Are We?

๐Ÿ‡ฐ๐Ÿ‡ญ

Mr. Sun

My name is Mr. Sun. I am a Khmer man. For the past 15 years, I have worked closely with the Bunong indigenous people and our elephants. Through this journey, I have gained deep knowledge of nature, wildlife, and the rich culture of our minority communities โ€” and now I want to share it with the whole world.

I am originally from Sihanoukville, but I decided to move to Mondulkiri to be next to my dear friends. I couldn't have made a better decision! A long time ago, I ran a touristic business in Koh Rong โ€” I owned boat tours and bungalows โ€” but you knowโ€ฆ life is very unpredictable.

Thanks to my previous experiences, I know exactly how to make a tourist feel at home. Come meet us: you will feel like part of my family.

Ivan

Ivan is an Italian traveler who first discovered Cambodia in 2018 and quickly fell in love with the countryโ€ฆ so much so that he couldn't stop coming back. His journey deepened during the Covid time, when he found himself stuck on a Cambodian island and embraced by a warm circle of new Khmer friends.

In that peaceful, nature-filled setting, surrounded by vibrant landscapes and the quiet strength of Buddhism and Khmer culture, he began to slow down and truly connect with the local way of life.

Over time, Ivan met Mr. Sun, who invited him to join a unique adventure: sharing Mondulkiri's hidden beauty, culture, and traditions with travelers from around the world โ€” an offer he couldn't refuse.

Together

Together โ€” but never alone โ€” we run Kiri Adventures & Mondulkiri Elephant Tour, two twin projects focused on blending local passion with responsible travel, to show you the heart of Mondulkiri in a respectful and meaningful way.

Thanks to our wide network of connections across Cambodia, we're also able to extend our tours to other regions of the country, offering you a deeper and more diverse exploration of Cambodian culture and nature.

Mondulkiri Elephant Tour is a community-based initiative designed to create employment and income for the Bunong people. Revenue supports the protection of our community's natural forests, serving as a sanctuary for our elephants โ€” the ancestral heritage and cultural symbol of the Bunong minority.

We rescue these majestic animals from exploitative practices, such as elephant riding and other commercial projects that prioritize profit over welfare. We invite you to visit and meet our elephants!

Why Us?

Mondulkiri Elephant Tour and Kiri Adventures were created with clear purposes: to help protect the natural environment of Mondulkiri, ensure the ethical care of elephants, support the livelihoods of the local Bunong communities who have lived in harmony with this land for generations, and to make sure that the profits benefit Cambodian and Bunong people first.

๐Ÿ˜

Ethical Elephant Care

Our approach is rooted in respect. The elephants in our care are not used for riding or performances, and they are never forced to entertain. Instead, they live in a protected, natural environment where they can roam, forage, and socialize as freely as possible.

Each elephant is accompanied by a mahout โ€” not as a controller, but as a lifelong caretaker. In Bunong culture, the relationship between mahout and elephant is based on trust, understanding, and daily care. The mahout ensures the elephant's safety, monitors its health, and provides support when needed.

Many of the elephants we care for cannot simply be released into the wild. Some have physical limitations, such as damaged or broken teeth, which prevent them from feeding properly in a completely wild environment. Others have spent much of their lives in captivity and would struggle to survive without human support. For these reasons, our goal is not "release," but responsible, ethical care for the rest of their lives.

Protecting Mondulkiri

Mondulkiri is a region of extraordinary beauty, but it has also faced serious challenges. In recent decades, deforestation and poaching have threatened both wildlife and local communities. Forests have been cleared, natural habitats reduced, and traditional ways of life put under pressure.

We believe that improving local livelihoods is one of the most effective ways to protect the environment. By creating sustainable tourism opportunities, we provide alternative income sources that reduce the need for harmful activities like illegal logging or hunting.

๐Ÿค

The Bunong People

The Bunong are an animist minority in Cambodia, deeply fused with nature and the forest. Their traditional way of life โ€” their knowledge of the jungle, their relationship with elephants, their rituals and ceremonies โ€” is under pressure today from deforestation, land grabbing, and modernization.

Thanks to our close ties with the Bunong people, we can provide authentic experiences in jungle exploration, elephant care, and cultural exchanges. Our primary goal is to help preserve their culture and way of life, and to ensure that tourism directly benefits the communities involved.

Our Mission

Through every tour, we aim to create awareness and generate direct support for conservation efforts and the Bunong people. When you visit, you are not just observing โ€” you are contributing to a system that values preservation over exploitation, respect over profit, and long-term impact over short-term gain.

Our mission is simple: protect the forest, care for the elephants, and empower the community โ€” so that Mondulkiri can thrive for generations to come.

"
We wish you a safe journey and a comfortable stay in our province. Come not just as a visitor, but as a friend of Mondulkiri.
